The competition to win the smartphone market is fierce. Motorola’s new Moto X is a perfectly good device that’s entered the running. But having a good device is not enough to win. (If you build a better mousetrap, people will NOT beat a path to your door. those days are over!) To win today you need marketing and advertising.
Advertising will get lots of attention, but marketing, sales, and promotion are more important to the sales of smartphones. For most people, the decision of which phone they actually purchase happens in the store. They have to physically see and touch the phone. Decisions are additionally swayed by the quality of the display, the condition of the showroom phones, and the salespeople.
The enthusiasm, knowledge and recommendations of real people are what shape most of our decisions. Motorola’s $500 million ad budget will work best if they spend as much time and attention on their less glamorous marketing efforts.
